Chrissy Highland is a Clinical Social Worker licensed in New Jersey and California. She practices psychotherapy virtually and in person from her office in Princeton, New Jersey. She holds a Master’s degree from the Smith College School for Social Work and completed a two-year Postgraduate Fellowship at the Wright Institute Los Angeles, where she now serves as a clinical supervisor. She is currently a candidate at the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey where she is advancing her training in psychoanalysis.
Chrissy specializes in supporting individuals through a range of mental health challenges, including anxiety disorders, depression, relationship issues, substance use, personality disorders, trauma, and the stress that often accompanies major life transitions.
As a member of Princeton University’s Exclusive Provider Network, Chrissy regularly works with undergraduate and graduate students, offering a deep understanding of the unique pressures faced in academic environments.
Chrissy brings extensive experience from working in outpatient community mental health, inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and inpatient mental health treatment. She is also the co-founder of an outpatient group for women survivors of sexual trauma, which has been running continuously since 2016.
I practice psychoanalytic psychotherapy, a therapeutic approach that prioritizes the relationship between patient and therapist. I use myself and the therapeutic relationship to uncover and explore unconscious patterns, beliefs, and emotions that may be influencing your current experiences.
My approach is trauma-informed, which means I am attuned to recognizing and understanding the impact of trauma on your life. I provide education and support in identifying these experiences, while also nurturing areas of psychological and emotional development that may have been hindered by trauma.
As a social worker, I realize the importance of not only looking at a person’s internal world, but also at their external circumstances. Factors such as race, gender expression, sexuality, ability, culture, and socioeconomic status will always be part of the treatment conversation. Furthermore, attention is given to systems of power and privilege that keep people unwell.
I work with adult individuals (18+). Special areas of interest include anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviors, trauma, relationship issues, life transitions, and individuals living with chronic illness. Also, due to my previous career as a medical Speech Language Pathologist, I am uniquely equipped to work with individuals impacted by stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurological disease- either survivors of stroke, brain injury, and neurological disease or those who are close to someone who has experienced a neurological event or condition.
Individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes long and occur one or more times per week. Payment is currently being accepted by credit card, debit card, cash (in-person), and Zelle. I am able to offer sliding scale prices on an individual basis.
I am currently only accepting insurance for Princeton University Students on the University Health Plan (Aetna). While I do not accept other insurance, I can provide a Superbill and assist with the process of submitting claims to health insurance for potential reimbursement.
